Borussia Dortmund – BVB attack turns from spectacle to problem: Is coach Edin Terzic now reconsidering?

Edin Terzic entered the podium in Dortmund’s Lensing-Carrée to applause from the fans in attendance, carrying a large coffin.

There is no doubt that the mood among Borussia Dortmund’s supporters could hardly be better after the 1-0 (0-0) victory in the first district derby in over a year and a half against FC Schalke 04. After all, the black and yellow did not only settle the balance of power in the Ruhr area for the moment with the prestigious victory, but also moved up to second place in the Bundesliga table.

“It’s the best three points you can get,” Terzic said happily on “19:09 – the black and yellow talk” of “Ruhr Nachrichten”, where the BVB coach was a guest on Wednesday night.

Terzic reveals: It was the worst moment of my career

UPDATE YESTERDAY AT 06:53

But if a football fan talks about the Revierderby these days, one name cannot be avoided: Youssoufa Moukoko’s name.

Moukoko imposes himself

The 17-year-old became a celebrated hero with his winning goal and thus started the striker debate at BVB.

“It’s a big burden for him. We hope that Mouki (Moukoko; Note d. editor) can draw strength from it. But it’s my job to tell him at the young age of 17 what’s not so good yet. But if things don’t go that way, I will remind him of that day,” explained Terzic.

For now, the young man has to settle for the role of Joker behind Anthony Modeste in the strikers’ pecking order, which was turned upside down after king transfer Sébastien Haller’s cancer. Only at the start of the season against Bayer Leverkusen (1-0) was Moukoko allowed to start in the middle of the attack.

However, the numbers certainly speak for the German U21 national team. With two goals and two assists, he is, together with Marco Reus, top scorer in the black and yellow. So far Modeste has scored one goal this season (with the same number of matches).

While the new signing from Cologne was largely ineffective against Schalke, as in the previous matches (14 ball actions), Moukoko immediately gave the Dortmund game the previously lacking depth. A quality that Borussia has missed so much so far.

BVB offensive paralyzed

The days when Erling Haaland almost single-handedly shot BVB to victory with his elemental power are finally over. Borussia have scored just nine goals in seven Bundesliga games this season. In the top half of the table, only FSV Mainz 05 scored fewer goals than Borussia (seven).

For comparison: in the previous season, the eventual runners-up already had 19 goals at the same time, although they conceded more than twice as many goals (seven against 13).

“We want to find a balance between offense and defense,” Terzic said. So far, the success speaks for the new, old coach who focused on the defense in the summer. BVB has recorded four 1-0 victories to date. Undoubtedly a quality – but the question arises how long this will last in the long run.

Especially as captain Reus, the last most reliable offensive player in the derby, suffered an ankle ligament injury and will be out for several weeks.

Modest in criticism – Terzic counters

The demands and thus the criticism of Modeste are correspondingly greater. “He looks like a foreign body and doesn’t fit in with the team,” complained TV pundit Dietmar Hamann recently on “Ruhr Nachrichten”.

The new signing has “not been integrated at all so far. He’s probably the best header in the Bundesliga, but he doesn’t fit into the team,” said the former Bayern professional.

However, Terzic did not want to leave it like that and defended the French. “Unfortunately, he has only trained with us for a short time. We are happy for him. I also told him that BVB will measure him on his goals. That’s not how I measure him. We as a team have to use his weapons,” said the 39 -year-old put the whole team on guard, adding: “Anthony will be our top striker.”

Words that are unlikely to resonate with rival Moukoko, who are currently negotiating their contract, which expires next summer. But should the 17-year-old continue to improve after the international break, Terzic will find it increasingly difficult to choose Modeste over the celebrated derby hero.
