European Basketball Championship 2022 will be played from 1 September. Germany will of course also participate. Here we explain everything regarding the opponents and the group of the DBB squad as well as the game plan.

The European Championship in basketball returns to Germany! After 2015, the tournament takes place on German soil for the second time in just seven years.

Unlike then, this time round finals and knockout rounds will also be held. On the other hand, the format has remained the same after the preliminary round with a total of four groups is played in four different countries. In addition to Germany, Italy (Milan), the Czech Republic (Prague) and Georgia (Tifilis) will also make their home fields available.

Let’s get to the DBB squad. With Robin Benzing, Maodo Lo and Johannes Voigtmann, three long-standing and almost always present players will once again form the core of the team.

There are also NBA stars Dennis Schröder, Franz Wagner and Daniel Theis. Until recently, Moritz Wagner was also part of the planning. However, due to an injury he reportedly picked up on Tuesday, the Berliner will not be able to take part in the action in Cologne. Maxi Kleber (time out) and Isaac Bonga (surgery) will also not be available for the team.

A total of six nations form a group. Played in free-for-all mode. When all matches are over, the top four teams in each group advance to the round of 16. There, the first-place winners in one group meet the fourth-place winners in another group, and the second-place winners meet the third-place winners.

The DBB squad will play their group games in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. Group B opponents for Gordon Herbert’s side are France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Slovenia and Hungary. With greats like Luka Doncic, Rudy Gobert or Domantas Sabonis, the German team faces a lot of NBA star power.
