Stan Wawrinka returns to competition next week in Canada. In the 1st round of the ATP 1000 tournament in Montreal, Romanden will compete with Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.
After his long injury layoff, Wawrinka, who fell back to 288th in the world rankings, struggled. According to his own statements, in July he was not yet at the level of fitness that he wanted. Now the 37-year-old is making a new attempt with a view to the US Open (August 29 to September 11).
Against Ruusuvuori, number 46 in the world, Wawrinka plays for the first time ever. The winner of this game will meet Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 11) from Poland in the second round. The field is led by world number 1 Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 4). Novak Djokovic (not vaccinated) and Rafael Nadal (sick) are missing in Montreal.
In Toronto, the Swiss women face the Williams sisters. Jil Teichmann (WTA 21) plays Venus Williams, Belinda Bencic (WTA 13) could face Serena in round 2.
