Kiel: Loge Holstentreue builds new playground in refugee housing
cool. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, 780 people have come to the Wiker community center in Diakonie Altholstein, including about 150 children. To make everyday life more enjoyable for the little ones, Loge Holstentreue recently built a large sandbox in the inner courtyard for 15,000 euros and equipped it with toys. Now the young people still lack an exciting place, which the city will soon have to put into practice on a meadow opposite the home.

The 38 druids from Kiel have worked really hard for the little refugees. The 125-year-old almond lodge “wanted not only to give money to the refugees from Ukraine, but rather to build a playground himself,” said its chairman, Jochen Graf von Gersdorff. The six wooden beams that frame the sandbox and act as a seat, each weigh a stable 300 kilos and come from Gut Hohenholm. The ash tree was sawn up and transported to the refugee residence by truck, complete with sand. “We strive for charity, lead a fraternal unity and stand up for our values,” von Gersdorff says. The children happily welcomed the sandbox.
There is a play area missing for all Wiker children and young people
Ulrike Pollakowski, chair of the Wik Local Advisory Board, is very pleased that “it went so fast”. Councilor Ingrid Lietzow also thinks “it’s just great, it was so necessary”. Precisely because many of the small children played on the street and thus put themselves in danger. But there is still a lack of a cozy meeting place for young people between 8 and 15 years. In April, the municipal council submitted the application for playground equipment to be set up in the open space between Herthastrasse and Rostocker Strasse as soon as possible, which today is only used as a parking space. There must also be room for children and young people there in the long term, ie in the middle of the Anscharpark / Schleusenpark green corridor.

This area is intended for all children and young people from Wik. The maritime neighborhood is enjoying increasing popularity. “More and more families are being drawn to this, and more families can be expected in the longer term when the former naval school for technicians is transformed into residential neighborhoods,” the statement said. New people are currently coming to the shared residence on Arkonastrasse 1, including many children. “There is no possibility that these children and young people can play and let off steam in a wide area,” the committee explains.

When the lease ends, the young people could also use the former bus shelter, says councilor Ingrid Lietzow.

Now the Youth Welfare and Building Committee gave the green light. “The administration must implement the injunction as soon as possible,” says Ingrid Lietzow. The place is used by many children for cycling and ball games, it is well accepted. But play equipment is lacking. “A basketball hoop, a football wall or a climbing wall, seating and tables would be great.” “Maybe other sponsors will come,” Lietzow says. The councilor has one more idea: “When the lease for the former bus shelter expires, it will also be able to be used by children and young people.”
