It’s tradition, challenge, cult – the German jumping and dressage city in Hamburg-Klein Flottbek is the most important tournament in Germany after CHIO in Aachen. NDR broadcasts live on TV and on NDR.de for four days.

After a two-year Corona break, the legendary Spring Derby takes place again for the first time. The 91st edition on Sunday is equipped with 120,000 euros. The course, where 17 natural obstacles must be overcome in 1,230 meters, is unique and has since 1920 been a very special difficulty for riders and horses.

In the first qualification still without the dreaded On Wednesday, Dermott Lennon from Great Wall won with the fastest track ride on his gelding Gelvins Touch ahead of Benjamin Wulschner (Bütow) with Crystall and Robert Bruhns (Ribnitz-Damgarten) with Corbain. A total of 14 couples remained undefeated. The second qualification is on Friday.

The Global Champions Tour stops again in Hamburg

In addition to the battle for the blue ribbon on Sunday, the focus of the traditional tournament is primarily on testing the million-dollar Global Champions Tour. Hamburg is the sixth station of 16 stages in the most lucrative riding series, plus there is a final in Prague. The Saturday jump is gifted with 300,000 euros and again draws national and international equestrian celebrities to the Hanseatic city. Top riders from 30 nations compete.

Thieme: “Focus 100 percent on the derby”

European champion André Thieme (Plau am See) will tackle both highlights, but has clear preferences: “The focus is 100 percent on the derby. I take the Global Champions Tour with me,” the 47-year-old said. For the spring derby, the triple winner saddles his gelding Contadur, who has already walked the track several times. “I do not know if he still remembers the jumps, but I know I have a fighter under me,” Thieme said.

The Mecklenburger brings his top horse Chakaria to the start of the Global Champions Tour. Hamburg is one of three tournaments that the chestnut mare will compete on the way to the hoped-for participation in the World Cup from 6 to 14 August in Herning, Denmark.

Will Sandra Auffarth withdraw from the coup this time?

Eventing rider Sandra Auffarth (Ganderkesee) is one of the European Champion’s biggest competitors in the Derby. “She’s the big favorite for me,” Thieme said, “she’s well prepared and in good shape.” Triple derby winner Toni Haßmann (Ibbenbüren) is also there with Top Gun. From 2004 to 2006, Hassmann won three times in a row at Collin.

Tournament Leader Wulff: “The Event Stage Has Changed Extremely”

A total of 44 tests with prize money of 1.4 million euros will be run in Klein Flottbek. The total budget is 3.6 million euros. At the latest overall edition of the classic in 2019, 96,000 spectators made a pilgrimage to Derby Park in Klein Flottbek. Tournament leader Volker Wulff doubts that this figure can be reached this time: “The whole event scene has changed extremely. If we get in the direction, we will be super happy.” What would be his greatest achievement? “When everyone who was here says it was as cozy as ever. That’s our motivation. We want to continue where we left off in 2019.”
