Concept2 ergometers in use at HYROX events worldwide

HYROX, The World Series of Fitness Racing, ended an extremely successful 2022 season in May despite the pandemic. fitness MANAGEMENT spoke with HYROX founder Christian Toetzke about the perspectives in the event series and their partnership with Concept2.

fM: You have the HYROX season 2022 on May 14th with the biggest world The Las Vegas Championships ended. What conclusion do you also draw with regard to the ebb pandemic and the associated Challenges for you as an organizer?

Christian Toetzke: It was by far the most successful season for us so far. We are extremely pleased, especially because after two years of the pandemic, the series developed almost immediately from the start.

At almost every event that existed before the pandemic, we had a higher number of participants than before and launched two new markets in the UK and the Netherlands, which are running extremely successfully. The event in London, which was the largest we have ever had with 4,000 participants, and the World Cup in Las Vegas with 1,200 participants confirm that we are well on our way to achieving our vision.

For a brand as young as HYROX – our first season was 2018 and Corona came in 2020 – this is a unique development. A pandemic is the most unfavorable situation imaginable.

What predictions are you giving us for the next HYROX season, which starts this fall? Are there any innovations or new events?

Yes. We want to keep improving our product every new season: How can I make the participant experience even better? What can further strengthen the events? Then we start thinking about new things. As the number of events increases, we also get more opportunities to invest in equipment that we can use for the events.

Participants can look forward to innovations that enhance all processes and the experience.

In the coming season, we are opening some new markets. We will increase from 30 events this year to 50. First there is the whole Middle East, which we launched with a partner in early May – Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

We want to expand Spain from an event in Madrid to five. So now we also have Barcelona, Bilbao, Málaga and Valencia on offer. In Scandinavia we will add new markets with events in Stockholm and Copenhagen, we will expand the Dutch market and also expand the British market with definitely an event in Glasgow.

Following the success of Las Vegas, we also want to expand the US market. In addition, there will be two events, primarily in the major metropolitan areas: in London, in New York and in Los Angeles.

We have a lot planned, and it’s also a good perspective for the fitness industry: All the people who sign up to attend the events want to train or – if they already train – want to train specifically. Gyms have the opportunity to expand their business with HYROX, attract new members and offer existing members new opportunities and training goals.

This is a phenomenon similar to what is known from triathlon or marathon. We want to work with as many gyms as possible.

What is the international feedback on the combination of Endurance and strength endurance elements that even experienced CrossFit®– Exercisers facing challenges?

Well you asked the question. In fact, we have received huge feedback in a very short time – HYROX is not only reported in specialty magazines like Men’s Health, but also in well-known consumer media like The Times (London). The event series is called a new trend, a new challenge, a new event for the bucket list.

More and more is being written about how to train for HYROX. It’s very important to me. We are convinced that it is one of the healthiest forms of exercise. And that is a very important message that we want to spread. HYROX is not only a super cool event that is incredibly fun, but it is also generally an extremely balanced and healthy form of exercise, which in combination is very successful internationally.

I assume that the successes abroad will “spill back” to Germany.

As a partner in ergometers, HYROX relied on Concept2 right from the start. How did this partnership come about?

Concept2 supports us in our development. If we are entering new markets now, we need new devices everywhere. And yes, a very close partnership developed.

In my eyes, Concept2 also makes the most consistent and reliable products. The devices are simply “competitive”. We tested different equipment before we started with HYROX. There were great devices with many features that we felt were too prone to fail for the competitors.

It is also important for HYROX that the devices are identical – in terms of resistance and performance – because we need the same conditions for all participants. Concept2 has achieved an incredibly high standard in this area. One can feel that the company comes from the rowing sport.
