Markus starting comeback? – “Werder Bremen was the perfect club!”

Cologne / Bremen – It is almost exactly six months ago that Markus Beginning was revealed with his fake vaccination card and thus lost his relatively fresh job as coach of SV Werder Bremen.

Meanwhile, the 47-year-old has been fined 36,000 euros by the Bremen District Court, the German Football Association (DFB) has suspended him as coach until June 10 and SV Werder Bremen has traveled with introductory replacement Ole Werner. How the Rhinelander experienced this moment, what part of the increase he claims for himself, how he looks back on the vaccination card scandal, and how he plans his future as a coach while still unvaccinated, has been reported. Mark the beginning in interview with DeichStube.

Mr. Beginning, do you see yourself as a climber?

If you were part of the season, then you might be part of what came out of it. The majority are of course with Ole Werner and Patrick Kohlmann, who did a great job. I took over Werder in a very difficult situation. I was often referred to as the poorest pig in the store because one never knew what the team would look like the next day. But I’ve never seen it like that. I was never alone, but always in exchange for Frank Baumann and Clemens Fritz. I helped shape the troupe. And the fact that nothing was changed in the winter shows that we were doing quite well.

Would you have made it up the ranks with Werder?

As a coach, you have that belief, but it’s a hypothetical question that I can not answer. I can only say: I was in the relegation with Kiel, I moved up with Cologne – and when I was knocked out by Werder after the 13th match day, we were three points behind Schalke, five after the relegation place and six after the direct promotion place.

How did you follow the decisive match against Regensburg?

I could only let it run on the side because I was too excited. I wanted so much promotion because I only met amazing people in Werder and because the whole environment deserved it.

Werder Bremen extras Markus Anfang explains how he wants to regain confidence after the vaccination card scandal

Have you checked out the Ascension celebrations?

no game was enough for me. I was so happy too.

Who were you in contact with at Werder subsequently?

I wrote to some players via WhatsApp, including Clemens Fritz and Frank Baumann.

You’re talking to Frank Baumann. Even if you lied to him about the vaccination card affair, he will continue to emphasize your part in the increase. Why is he doing this?

Frank knows exactly how my situation was, how I felt. He knows that I am basically a sincere and honest person. I have proven that for years. But I lied about it, and I apologized to him.

You have often commented on how important honesty is to you. How are you going to get that confidence back?

If you have made a mistake, three things are crucial: 1. You must take the consequences. That’s why I quit. 2. You must accept the punishment you receive for it. I did this. You have to apologize. I even did it in public.

Markus Beginning and the vaccination card scandal: Werder Bremen executives know “that my health problems are justified”

Werder boss Klaus Filbry once said you took a wrong turn at one point. When was it?

He also said that he knows my situation and my health problems are justified. He knows, I think, the whole club knows, and therefore I do not need to explain it so much more.

With the fake vaccination card, you were exempted from the mandatory test at Werder. This is why many people are annoyed that you put them at an unnecessary risk of infection. Can you understand that?

Of course, but I tested myself every morning and was never positive. It was my main interest that there were no positive cases here. I always tested myself afterwards when I met other people.

Who did you turn to for help in what was certainly not an easy time after you left Bremen?

I went home and took care of my family. That was the most important thing.

How is the family doing with this?

My family has been through enough, so now I want to keep them completely out of it.

What have you been doing in the last few weeks?

It’s very simple: I was trying to find myself and settle down with my family.

Werder Bremen: Markus Anfang will work as a coach again after the vaccination scandal – “My life goes on”

If you went out anyway, how were the reactions?

I experienced many shakes of the head – about the way my situation was presented to the public. Stranger stranger told me it was madness.

Have you found that madness too?

I hardly thought about it. My thoughts were only about my family.

The story is half a year ago, at what point do you see yourself now?

I resigned, I got my fines, I apologized publicly. This is now a mistake that unfortunately belongs to me. But my life goes on.

Do you want to work as a coach again?

If you have as much passion as I do, and if you see how the final stages of my career went athletically, then it was not so wrong of me as a coach.

Are you afraid of not getting a coaching job anymore?

I’m not worried.

Ex-coach Markus Beginning in his time at Werder Bremen: “When I came, there was a lot of trouble”

DFB has decided that you can work again from 10 June. Have clubs already signed up?

I’ve already had several conversations – even quite shortly after my resignation.

Where do you see yourself as a coach?

I like to play good and successful football. I’m just happy when I can be on the field with the boys, can help them and they leave the field happy. If I can convey it again and spread my passion again, then I will be happy.

Back to Werder: Who and what has impressed you the most in the last few weeks?

Above all, that everyone stayed healthy and could play through. Getting it right was our main task in the summer. When I arrived, the team was not so stable, a lot happened. We had to build a lot there. One thing, by the way, made me think of Cologne.

In which?

It’s a good way to have two attackers up front who are harmonizing. In Cologne we had Jhon Cordoba and Simon Terodde from the start. It was only later that we got Marvin Ducksch to Niclas Füllkrug in Bremen.

But you put Füllkrug on the bench.

It takes time. Niclas was not 100 percent at the time. Some others did not either. You also need everyone on board, if possible, to be able to play the way you want. Then we had the incident with Niclas. We finally tried two strikers from the start against St. Pauli and Nuremberg, and it worked well.

Markus Anfang praises Frank Baumann and Co .: “Werder Bremen may be lucky to have such personalities”

The 2-1 victory in Nuremberg had what it took to become a sticking point match, but then everything went differently with your exit …

It is correct. Ole Werner said several times that he could build on this basic formation.

But there are some who say: Ole Werner is a stroke of luck, he fits Werder much better than you. It hurts?

No, that’s completely legitimate. Ole Werner and Patrick Kohlmann did a great job. We handed over the team when we were on the right track. Regular players like Leonardo Bittencourt, Ömer Toprak and Christian Groß were just back.

Will the storm duo Ducksch / Füllkrug score just as often in the 1st league?

I’m staying away from that. It is not my job to judge. I can only say: Werder simply belongs in the Bundesliga. I cross my fingers that Werder will stay there.

Could you imagine working for Werder again at some point?

Anything can happen in football, even if you can not imagine it at the moment.

What do you want to take with you from your Werder time?

Werder is a very tidy, quiet family club, although it did not always look like that in the summer. But the people involved have remained calm. Especially Frank Bauman. Frank is a really great person and an excellent sports manager. He shows incredible empathy and expertise. He exudes a very special calm. I would also like to mention Clemens Fritz and Klaus Filbry. Werder may be lucky to have such personalities. I felt incredibly comfortable. Werder was the perfect club for me. (knee)
