- According to a media report, FC Bayern Munich should be interested in Ousmane Dembele from FC Barcelona.
- The former Dortmund player has a reputation as a “scandal professional” in Germany due to several offenses.
- Nevertheless, there are some arguments for picking up the French winger.
FC Bayern Munich needs new stars! Robert Lewandwoski has announced his desire to change and will leave the record champions by the summer of 2023. Serge Gnabry’s contract extension, which also has only one year left, is apparently difficult.
“We want to strengthen the team, selectively at the top, but also across the board,” said Sports Director Hasan Salihamidzic on Sunday in “Sport1 Doppelpass”. A possible new signing is said to be former BVB star Ousmane Dembele, whose contract with FC Barcelona expires this summer. So he would be free.
As reported by the French “L’Equipe” (content behind the payment barrier), FC Bayern have been working intensively with the 25-year-old for about a year. Julian Nagelsmann should have already analyzed the player and according to the report would like to work with him.
FC Bayern’s interest in the Frenchman is not new. Already in 2016, before Dembele switched to Borussia Dortmund, a commitment was discussed. “We were on the right track,” Michael Reschke, then the club’s technical director, revealed in the “Bild” podcast “Bayern Insider”. But: “The boy just wanted to go to Barcelona. And he knew that the road to Barca would have been blocked if he had moved to Munich.”
At Dortmund, Dembele went on strike to force a move
So he used Borussia Dortmund as a staging post to get to his dream club a year later for a fee of around 140 million euros. Any means were right for him: In 2017, he went on strike for training at Borussia Dortmund to force a switch to the Catalans. Since then, he has been considered a scandal professional in Germany.
Otherwise, he wrote negative headlines. He left his house in Dortmund in such a catastrophic state that he was sentenced by the city court in Dortmund to pay his former landlord 10,000 euros in 2019. There are also stories from Barcelona about missed training sessions without apology and careless handling of his body.
The logical question arises: does such a player fit into Bayern Munich?
Oliver Kahn calls for players “with whom you can identify”
In an interview with “Welt am Sonntag”, CEO Oliver Kahn emphasized once again that the character of the player is also important when it comes to picking up newcomers: “We need players who are aware of the commitment that comes with it, the emblem of FC Bayern München. on the chest. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find such players with whom one can identify. ”
Does this description fit Dembele?
After all: FC Bayern have already proven in the past that they can integrate professionals with a lot of talent and a little discipline. A good example was Arturo Vidal, who is said to have participated in several escapades under the influence of alcohol before switching to FC Bayern in the summer of 2015, but worked at FC Bayern for three seasons.
Franck Ribery’s successful time at FC Bayern was not without scandals either. He was accused of having sex with a minor prostitute (he is said not to have known his age, so he was acquitted), quarreled with Arjen Robben in the locker room and often turned out to be a hothead on the court.
FC Bayern, especially the then president Uli Hoeneß, nevertheless took a protective stance against the French. He paid back with strong performances. A similar approach could also work for Dembele.
The ‘French connection’ would facilitate Dembele’s integration
In addition, Dembele would meet several Frenchmen in Munich with Dayot Upamecano, Benjamin Pavard, Lucas Hernandez and Kingsley Coman, whom he knows from the national team. The so-called “French Connection” is considered a conspiracy. This could make integration easier for Dembele.
In terms of football, Dembele was not always able to convince in FC Barcelona (149 competitive matches, 32 goals, 34 assists). However, this was also related to his recurring injury problems. There is no doubt about his football potential.
Neymars caliber Dembele
“Dembele may be the best player in the world at his position,” said Barcelona coach Xavi at the end of last year. Former Schalke and Barcelona professional Ivan Rakitic said on the BeIn Sports TV channel: “He is of Neymar’s caliber or other players with this style. Ousmane has qualities that very few players have.”
With his speed, his two-footedness and his strengths in dribbling, he would fit well into FC Bayern Munich’s game philosophy, which is traditionally dependent on strong wingers.
Dembele would therefore be an appropriate successor to Gnabry if a contract extension with him fails. In this case, a possible sale of Gnabry this summer could bring money into the coffers, so that Dembele’s probably high wage demands could also be met.
Dembele’s return to the Bundesliga is therefore not unrealistic. And who knows: maybe he would even manage to throw off the “reputation of the scandal profession”.
