French Open 2022: favorites, prize money, innovations – the most important questions about Roland-Garros

For the first time in two years, the French Open will be held without major restrictions.

With Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, the French audience can look forward to two players who currently have momentum on their side and are therefore the hottest candidates for the title.

Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, has to settle for an unfamiliar role and is not one of the favorites after a disappointing start to the season.

The main draw starts at the French Open on May 22 (live on Eurosport and on Eurosport on Joyn). Here is an overview of the most important questions and answers.

So what?

French Open, this year’s second Grand Slam tournament. Nearly 44 million euros in prize money are at stake on the gravel roads in Paris. Djokovic and Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) are the defending champions.

After the tournament was held with restrictions for the past two years due to the corona pandemic, the organizers are now running the full program again.

What German professionals are there?

The most promising professionals from a German perspective, at least in terms of world rankings, are Olympic champion Alexander Zverev and three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Angelique Kerber. A total of eight players from Germany are in the main draw in the two individual competitions:

Men

  • Alexander Zverev
  • Daniel Altmaier
  • Peter Gojowczyk
  • Oscar Otte

Women

  • Angelique Kerber
  • Andrea Petkovic
  • Tatyana Maria
  • Jule Niemeier

Who is among the favorites?

Djokovic is clearly one of the first candidates for the title. After the 34-year-old was unable to complete the major tournaments this spring due to his refusal to vaccinate, he is eager for his 21st Grand Slam title, with which he would overtake Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal .

But Djokovic must not only get rid of Paris record winner Nadal (13 titles), but also the teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz, also from Spain. For women, the world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland, who triumphed in Roland Garros two years ago, is the favorite after Ashleigh Barty retired.

What about Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber?

Zverev starts in Paris in a situation unknown to him. For the first time in a long time, before the start of a Grand Slam tournament, he does not belong to the inner circle of favorites, the spring for the Olympic champion was too mixed.

Perhaps the role of the outsider psychologically is not a disadvantage for him. Kerber’s season has also been disappointing so far, and Paris has not been a good place for the triple major winner for years. In 2018, she finally survived the first round – but then it went on to the quarterfinals.

What is new?

The game format. From now on, the same counting method will be used to determine the winner of the deciding set in all Grand Slam tournaments.

Going forward, a match tie-break of up to ten points will be played at the French Open, as well as at Wimbledon, at the US Open and Australian Open with a score of 6: 6 in the final round.

Where can you watch the matches?

Eurosport shows a comprehensive program from Paris. During the 15 days of the Roland-Garros tournament, more than 175 hours of the most prestigious clay court tournament in the world will be broadcast live on Eurosport 1 on free television.

At Eurosport with Joyn Plus, all games from the French capital – including the current qualification – can be viewed. Barbara Rittner and this year Mischa Zverev are back at work as experts.
