And the team, which has been completely renewed with more than 20 newcomers, has big plans and would like to be in the front again this year after sixth place in 2021. “The Huskies are hard to judge. They are a very young team, but they have many “Talented players and good German quarterbacks. We certainly do not want to underestimate them,” said Lübeck’s defense coordinator Florian Dannehl. “It’s important for us to have our nerves under control and play our game. But I go into the match with a good feeling.”

And Special Teams Coordinator Mark Holtze adds: “We will definitely win against Hamburg and start the season with a sense of accomplishment. Preparations for the Huskies are going well so far, we look forward to the derby.”
Staff-wise, the Cougars are well placed at the beginning of the preparation after weeks of difficult weeks due to corona. In the defensive line, the 2-meter giant Oliver Bebensee, who came from Hamburg, will make his debut in the Berglöwen jersey, while the defender Timo Hilker and the line player Jan-Earl Beekhuis make a comeback after long injury breaks. Only newcomer Björn Bars (Rostock Griffins) is not in shape yet.
Comeback for crowd favorite Jamie Dale
Quarterback Jadrian Clark must do without the receivers Ole Schröder (injured) and Paul Mäusling (private causes) on the attack. On the other hand, experienced Jamie Dale, who was rested in the test match after his serious knee injury in August last year, is back on the field and had to put a new push in the attack.
Cougars trust the fans against the Hamburg Huskies
In addition, Lübeck hopes for support from fans. “A good one. Bunaimshof’s loud backdrop can give the team an extra boost,” said Dannehl. And the Lübeck defensive coach also knows how to attract even more spectators to the stadium. “We have to get sexy. That means playing attractive football with an offensive that scores a lot of points and a defense that really packs punches, the 50-year-old says. There should be a first taste of it for fans against the huskies.

The Lübeck defense must pay special attention to Hamburg’s offensive all-rounder David Akins II. The 32-year-old American was signed after the originally planned American running back Alex Cardenas had to leave the Hanseatic city before the season for family reasons. Akins is a trained wide receiver, but can also play in the quarterback position.
The Huskies – like the Cougars (kicker Eric Schlomm and defensive back Maximilian Wessel) – lost some key players to the ELF team in the Sea Devils again in 2022. For example, pass player Jamal Okeke and quarterback Moritz Maack have joined city rivals from the European League of Football . Sunday will show who could better compensate for the departures.
