An offended Markus Weinzierl chose the TV camera as a last resort. Just minutes after the final whistle, the FC Augsburg coach single-handedly announced his departure and deflected the unsuspecting manager Stefan Reuter. With the utterly surprising bang, Weinzierl revealed the broken relationship with the 1990 world champion and fled.

“I would actually stay here longer,” Weinzierl said after the 2-1 (1-1) victory over SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday. “For me, it’s the right decision not to have more conversations.”

The coach, who returned to his heart club in April 2021, had only one contract until the end of June. An extension was actually considered a formality, as Reuter also explained. Talks should not take place until next week.

Weinzierl talks about a long process of reflection

Weinzierl said it was a “clear sign” if no talks had taken place before the final day of the game. “Many reasons” would ultimately have been crucial to saying goodbye. After a month-long process, he first made the decision the day before the last match. “It’s a tough ending for me personally, but I proudly go home,” Weinzierl said.

Before the kick-off, he had strolled across the lawn in an almost melancholy way and sucked the impressions from the arena to himself. After the final whistle, the 47-year-old gathered his team around him and informed them of his move.

He left out Reuter and exposed him. “No, but he will notice now,” Weinzierl replied on the Sky TV channel when asked if he had informed the manager. “It came as a big surprise to me,” Reuter admitted, both annoyed and taken aback. Was the relationship broken? “I did not feel like it,” he said. In times when media statements are carefully planned, Weinzierl chose the maximum level of escalation.

Reminiscent of the match in 2016

It had already crashed between Weinzierl and Reuter in 2016. Straubinger then switched to FC Schalke after four successful years together, including a Europa League tour. Reuter complained that Weinzierl had not announced his departure as clearly in advance as he claimed. The coach saw it differently.

When Weinzierl returned in 2021, the dispute was considered settled. The coach replaced Heiko Herrlich and stayed in the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg. The goal of staying up in the league was also reached this season. But Reuter had expected more. “I think the squad is really good that we could have had a better season,” the 55-year-old said, lamenting the lack of development. Weinzierl, on the other hand, did not think the squad was that excellent and apparently underestimated the relegation.

With the surprising announcement on Friday about the departure of club president Klaus Hofmann for health reasons, he also lost a lawyer. “It’s a pillar that broke away,” Weinzierl admitted. Since he apparently also lacked Reuters appreciation, he saw no basis for a future. “It was not planned that way,” Weinzierl said of his blitz-out while his players were still celebrating with their families in front of the fan curves. “My heart hurts too.”

What happens to Reuter?

Talk and silence – it was once again the focal point of Augsburg. Reuter pointed out that he had agreed on a clear schedule for contract talks with his coach. “I do not want to avoid him, but his decision is to be accepted,” the manager said.

There is no schedule to find a coach. “We will sit down and find the right coach for FC Augsburg,” assured Reuter, who is the only strong man left at the club after Hofmann and Weinzierl left.

At the same time, criticism of Reuter is growing. The half-lives of the last three coaches Weinzierl, Herrlich and Martin Schmidt were only about a year each. According to “Sport Bild”, the coach of Borussia Dortmund II, Enrico Maassen, can become his successor. When asked if he would still be with FC Augsburg next season, Reuter replied: “You can assume that.” (dpa / Martin Moravec / ska)
