After three days in Hungary, the Giro d’Italia is back in its homeland. And the first stage this year on Italian soil has it all. The fourth section starts in Avola and ends at Etna. It is the first difficult mountain end this year.
This challenges the favorites to the overall standings on the fourth day. You can not win the Giro today, but if you have bad legs, you can definitely lose it.
After the start in Hungary, the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) leads the overall position ahead of the British Simon Yates (+0: 11) and compatriot Tom Dumoulin (+0: 16), the Giro winner 2017. Best German is Emanuel Buchmann (Bora- hansgrohe) in a 45th place (+1: 08).

14:49 – Giro live – 79 kilometers back
79 kilometers is still ahead of the leading group. Outliers are currently on the only longer, flatter section. But here too there are always some ups and downs. The advantage over the field is about 7:35 minutes.
14:40 – Vansevenant virtual in pink
The best placed rider from the top group is Mauri Vansevenant (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team). The Belgian is number 20, 43 seconds behind Van der Poel. So Vansevenant is currently wearing the pink jersey. Second best from the group is the Italian Valerio Conti (+0: 47). Lennard Kämman is 1:55 minutes behind van der Poel in the overall standings.
14:30 – Outliers harmonize
The management team with Lennard Kennan continues to work well together. But there are still 92 kilometers to go. In the final, however, the harmony is soon over. Your lead is currently 7:55 minutes.
14:22 – 103 km – Steered in the field
The platoon gained some ground and reduced the gap to the escaped by two minutes. Meanwhile, there is a drop at the back of the field. Luca Rastelli (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) falls and causes some chaos. But the Italian is quickly back on his bike.
14:10 – Giro live – match for the mountain jersey
Today’s final at Etna is of course not only about the pink jersey, but of course also about the blue mountain jersey. This is currently still on the shoulders of Rick Zabel, who secured the jersey in the individual time trial in Budapest with the fastest time on the climb to the castle and successfully defended it on the 3rd stage. Pascal Eekhoff overtook him in terms of points (both 5 points), but because the German is better classified in the overall standings, he is allowed to roll in the blue against Etna today. However, the adventure in blue will also end there. As you know, Zabel does not climb and therefore falls behind on Etna. Today’s winner was to be the new wearer of the mountain jersey. 40 mountain points are awarded on Mount Etna.

It just seemed like Calmejane had given up his race to catch up. But now it’s the turn of the French. The leading group now includes 14 drivers. Today’s refugees are: Stefano Oldano (Alpecin-Fenix), Valerio Conti (Astana Qazaqstan), Lennard Källa (Bora-hansgrohe), Davide Villella (Cofidis), Rémy Rochas (Cofidis), Diego Andrés Camargo (EF Education-EasyPost), Erik Fetter (EOLO-Kometa), Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert-Matériaux), Alexander Catafort (Israel – Premier Tech), Gijs Leemreize (Jumbo-Visma), Sylvain Moniquet (Lotto Soudal), Mauri Vansevenant (Quick) – Step Alpha Vinyl), Juan Pedro López (Trek-Segafredo) and Lilian Calmejane (AG2R Citroën Team).

The lead for the refugees is already more than four minutes. Behind them, Lilian Calmejane (AG2R Citroën Team) is chasing after the group. He’s only ten seconds away, can he still catch up?
13:00 – Van der Poel caught up
Mathieu van der Poel was caught offside. The leading group around Lennard Kennan still exists. But their advantage is not great yet.
12:57 – Giroticker – Van der Poel attack!
Now the man attacks in pink. Mathieu van der Poel tries to build a bridge over the breakaway group. The Dutchman is a strong and versatile rider, but not a climbing goat. If he wants to defend the pink jersey today, then he needs to start the final climb with a lead over Simon Yates and Co. A smart move by the 27-year-old.
12:53 – Feel in the lead
The riders are now out of Avola and tackling the first climb of the day. However, this is not categorized. The next motorists are blowing for the attack. Participating again: Thomas De Gendt. But Lennard Kennan also breaks out and takes the leap into the breakaway group.
