– Instead of speeding up the new season, the last business trip of this season for 1. FC Nürnberg ended in a small failure. The clear 0: 3 defeat, but above all the indisputable way the club presented itself in the penultimate match of the season in Holstein Kiel, not only coach Robert Klauß got on his nerves.
Just two days earlier, Robert Klauß had stressed how much he enjoyed working for him on the occasion of his early contract extension. 1. FC Nürnberg make. On Sunday afternoon, the coach seemed to have temporarily lost his job satisfaction. Which should hardly come as a surprise in light of the undeniable performance that his team delivered defensively and offensively over long stretches in the clear 3-0 defeat in Kiel.
“It annoys me enormously. The way we played was okay in the first half, but not in the second,” Klauß summed up, although if you look closely, there was not much that was really okay in the first half. After all, it was already 2-0 after 45 minutes for a KSV Holstein, whose season is also over, but apparently still felt a little bit of interest in professional football. “Of course, it’s a little easier to play without pressure,” coach Marcel Rapp said.
With the club’s professionals, whose support around 1,200 fans had traveled more than 700 kilometers to the Baltic Sea, there was no sign of this ease. The lack of sporting incentive after the burst of dreams of promotion seemed to paralyze the head and legs, the air was somehow out. Even the prospect of a bonus of around one million euros, which would have waved the club if they had placed themselves at the table and improved in the TV money ranking, was obviously not a good motivation for Nuremberg’s sluggish summer footballers.
The basic virtues were lacking
“It says a lot when the opponent’s goalkeeper does not have to hold a single ball,” admitted Christian Mathenia, who had a less relaxed working day than Ioannis Gelios and also had to get three balls out of the net: “I can not. Explain how we play this fight here today. ” The team failed to bring their “basic virtues to the field”, the captain criticized, “and then it becomes difficult for us to win matches”. In another division season marked by ups and downs, whose overall positive impression threatens the club to thwart with such performances at home.
Klauß had announced that he wanted to gain momentum and “a good feeling” for the upcoming season in the last two games. “Unfortunately, this opportunity was left behind on Sunday,” the 37-year-old said, trying not too hard to hide his frustration. “I do not believe in letting the season go to waste. We want points. We have nothing to give away.” By which he should not only have meant the TV money, but above all the sympathy values.
As a result of the defeat, the club fell to a seventh place in the table, and on the last day of play 1. FC Heidenheim could even pass if they win the home game against Karlsruher SC and Nürnberg also in a duel with FC Schalke 04, which has already been promoted should go out. The eighth place in the final calculation would then be just within the table region given as the official goal of the season, but in the meantime it should be seen as a small disappointment.
“Now it’s about gathering ourselves and playing another good match against Schalke next week. It’s important,” warned Klauß, also in view of the collective mood before the upcoming season – which will then affect both the coach and the fans, should be really fun.
