Pervan and Gerhardt secure Wolfsburg’s victory, but Cologne is still celebrating

Cologne lost 1-0 against the wise Wolfsburg, but with their current 7th place, FC has already secured international business with the Europa Conference League.

Gerhardt makes it 1-0 to Wolfsburg, Schwäbe extends in vain.

Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart changed staff once after the 4-1 victory in FC Augsburg and picked up Özcan (after a yellow card) for Ljubicic.

VfL coach Florian Kohfeldt had two new players on board compared to 1-1 in Stuttgart: Pervan kept the goal for Casteels (shoulder injury), van de Ven (starting XI debut) replaced Roussillon at left back.

Modeste and Schmitz miss the lead

Cologne got off to a furious start: Pervan immediately warmed up to Modeste’s header (3 ‘) and deflected Schmitz’s diagonal shot just past the post (6’). FC already stressed the opponent in the build-up game, but after almost a quarter of an hour the Wolves adapted better to the Baumgart team’s attack.

Cologne changed their rhythm in phases, taking things a little easier and looking for a hole in Wolfsburg’s defensive network with a patient build-up game. Almost successfully, Özcan was blocked at the last second (19th). Against a VfL that was about to win in safety, and which subsequently kept the Rhinelanders better and better at a distance, this was the hosts’ last promising offensive accent for a long time.

Kruse does not strike – Gerhardt does

The visitors scored one for the first time, and Cologne was lucky that Kruse did not lower the ball free-standing – Schwäbe parried (30 ‘).

At FC, despite increased effort, the wheels did not work properly before the break, Özcan’s volley did not make Pervan sweat (35th).

Instead, Wolfsburg kept improving when it came to ball control. With consequences: Gerhardt completed a class combination shortly before the change of lead (43rd).

Pervan back at his post

Cologne had to come after the restart – and came across waiting and lurking wolves. As in the beginning, Pervan had to intervene and did brilliantly when Kainz landed (53 ‘).

Lucky for the Billy Goat team, Nmecha’s goal was shut down for offside after a combination that was worth seeing (55 ‘). So FC hoped for an equalizer, which Kainz again came close to (59 ‘).

The will of the Cologne towards compact and in the further course almost only defending guests was not to be denied, the Rhinelanders ran tirelessly. What was missing was the final precision, penetrating power and determination – also Modeste (69th, 73rd) and Uth (73rd).

Even the complete depletion of the exchange quota did not bring FC the desired success. It was by the narrow defeat, after which Hoffenheim’s defeat against Leverkusen (2: 4) Cologne’s participation at least in the Europa Conference League is already certain.
