- Jil Teichmann (WTA 35) wins the quarterfinals against Anhelina Kalinina (WTA 37) in Madrid 6: 3, 6: 4.
- The Seelander is in the semifinals of a WTA 1000 tournament for the third time in his career.
- The Swiss player’s next opponent is Jessica Pegula, world number 14 from the USA (Thursday at 21.00 live on SRF).
Jil Teichmann continues his race at the clay court tournament in Madrid. The 24-year-old Swiss had to have patience on Wednesday before she could line up in her quarter-final. The delay caused by the previous games did not bother her.
Teichmann not only convinced against the proven sand specialist Anhelina Kalinina with her running work and her forehand, but also kept the nerve in the important moments. After 90 minutes, she used her third match point to win. Seeländerin is still there in “caja magica” without losing a sentence.
Teichmann’s first semifinal since Cincinnati
In the 3rd meeting with Kalinina, Teichmann never fell into reserve. In the first round, she had to accept the immediate rebreak after the service breakthrough to 4: 2. As a result, she hit the opponent’s service game again. With a forehand longline, she caught Kalinina against the running direction.
In the second round, Kalinina immediately managed to react twice after being behind at the break. The 25-year-old did not know the answer to the Swiss woman’s third break. Teichmann knew he was in trouble after pulling back an opponent.
In the semifinals on Thursday, Teichmann will face American Jessica Pegula (WTA 14) for the first time in her career. For the Swiss, it is the first 1000-level semi-final ever and the third overall. The last time she entered the last four was in August 2021 in Cincinnati.
