After almost three hours, Belinda Bencic (WTA 13) could still celebrate reaching the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. The Eastern Swiss defeated Czech Karolina Muchova (WTA 67) 6: 3, 4: 6, 7: 5.
After winning the first set, Bencic’s task became increasingly difficult. In the second round, she cashed in two breaks, equalizing the set. The 25-year-old then paved the way for victory in the penultimate match, where she got the only service breakthrough in the third set.
Undefeated on clay
Bencic thus maintained her undefeated run on clay this season: her series now includes eight wins. In the quarterfinals, the Swiss meets the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (WTA 10), her opponent in the final, when she won the tournament in Charleston.
