Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid. Once again, the handle does not work.

Update from 5 May at 14:00: Pep Guardiola still has to wait for his first Champions League title since 2011. The Catalan coach reacted with losses to his Skyblues’ Champions League exit. “We did not suffer much, but football is unpredictable,” Guardiola said in an interview after the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid bt sport. You did not play well before the break. After Riyad Mahrez’s opening goal in the 73rd minute, Rodrygo brought Real Madrid into extra time with a double attack (90/91 minutes). Karim Benzema decided the match from the penalty spot.

“After the goal (1-0) we found our pace, our game. The players felt comfortable on the pitch,” the former Bayern coach remarked. “It was not like they were attacking and attacking and attacking and we could not survive it. “Eventually, however, Madrid ordered many players in the field and then scored two goals from crosses. Due to the pressure, it was not normal to play his best game in the semi-finals, explained a visibly helpless Guardiola.

Manchester City invests over a billion euros – and does not win the Champions League

The Catalan has been at Manchester City since 2016, and since joining the club has spent well over a billion euros in transfer fees to strengthen the team. Citizens are still waiting for the handlebars to this day. A brief look back at the last few years’ Champions League term:

  • 2021/2022: Semifinal against Real Madrid
  • 2020/2021: Final against Chelsea
  • 2019/2020: quarter final against Olympique Lyon
  • 2018/2019: quarter final against Tottenham Hotspur
  • 2017/2018: quarter final against Liverpool
  • 2016/2017: Round of 16 final against AS Monaco
  • 2015/2016: semifinal against Real Madrid

Champions League semi-finals: Real Madrid vs. Manchester City

First report from 4 May at 12.12: Madrid – Who can play against Liverpool on May 28 and play on the handle of Paris’ Stade de France? In the second round of the semi-finals (live in the ticker) of the UEFA Champions League, fans can once again look forward to the top duel between Real Madrid and Manchester City. Even the first stage did justice to the scale of this game and delivered a real football festival. The English won 4: 3, but after Karim Benzema’s late goal they can not be too sure.

In the rounds against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea FC, the Madrilenians showed that they only really reached their top form at the Santiago Bernabéu. It seems that “Royal” in the Champions League is again just as immovable as in the spectacular race between 2016 and 2019 under coach Zinedine Zidane. Especially Karim Benzema really turns on. The Frenchman should have convinced even the last critics of his world class this season. At least 14 goals in the previous ten CL matches speak for themselves.

Real Madrid – Manchester City: Karim Benzema chases record in the Champions League

The 34-year-old also has the chance to equalize or even beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s record. In the 2013/2014 season, the multiple footballer scored 17 goals in 11 matches, setting the record for most goals in a single Champions League season. Should Benzema deliver again at the Bernabéu and send his team on to the final, the CR7 brand could falter.

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will try to prevent this as much as possible. The Spaniard is still waiting for his first Champions League title after his time at FC Barcelona. It has so far not succeeded either with FC Bayern or in Manchester, last year he failed in the final against FC Chelsea and goal scorer Kai Havertz. Should Pep once again not be able to take on the European crown, the voices testifying that he is training himself in major Champions League matches will certainly not keep quiet.

Champions League: Manchester City could lose sight of the third title

A possible exit against Madrid would also increase the pressure on “Citizens” in the league. In the League Cup and FA Cup, the team has already failed in Liverpool FC, which is only one point behind the “Skyblues” in the Premier League. Losing to Real Madrid would mean winning the league title for not having played a totally lost season. However, this scenario is still far away. After all, City have probably the world’s widest squad and continued to present themselves in top form in the 4-0 away win in Leeds.

Opponents Real Madrid can play a little more freely. Carlo Ancelotti’s team celebrated their 35th Primera División title this weekend and presented the trophy in the streets of the Spanish capital. Without being counted among the narrower circle of favorites in advance, a victory in the Champions League would gild the season. The aging team around Benzema (34), Modric (36) and Kroos (32) were no longer expected to do much. Are they now shocking Guardiola and the Citizens?
