  • There is a risk of a stalemate and a legal aftermath.

It could be something on the last match day: Borussia Dortmund then receive Hertha BSC until the end of the season. Sportingly, it should not be about anything for BVB, but the team still owes the fans a lot in the last home game after some embarrassing performances, and the 2: 3 shame from the first game must be erased.

And besides, there can still be a lot at stake for the Berliners: Despite a good starting point, Hertha is not yet completely saved in the relegation battle.

So there’s a lot in this game that can get even more explosive once it starts. Behind the scenes, a dispute over goalkeeper Marcel Lotka is underway. He was to play for Borussia’s second team from the upcoming season, in early March both clubs announced the transfer of the 20-year-old in press releases. “Our U-23 goalkeeper Marcel Lotka is leaving our capital club after the end of the season and will join Borussia Dortmund’s second team for the 2022/23 season,” Hertha said in a statement.

At the time, Lotka was number five in Berlin, having played its first Bundesliga match a few days earlier in the 3-0 loss in Freiburg because the Berliners were missing four other goalkeepers due to injury and illness. About two months later, Marcel Lotka is number one on the licensed team – and he should remain so after the summer.

Secret contract extension in Berlin

The first rumors were circulating already at the beginning of the week, and now the suspicion that the Berliners have extended the current contract with the player after the announcement of the change is confirmed. Apparently, the term was dated June 30, 2023, which is said to have been made possible by a similar clause in Lotka’s contract. The Berliners had to withdraw the clause before 30 April, they have apparently done so, and now the question is: Will Lotka switch to BVB on 1 July 2022 or not?

Hertha kept the expansion in the capital secret, and “Bild” then reported on the new situation in the last few days. Because the Berliners had already announced the change before using the anchored contract option, and Dortmund signed a waterproof two-year contract with Lotka, a legal conflict now threatens. As “Bild” reported, they knew nothing about Lotka’s clause in Dortmund.

Where is Lotka going and who is going to pay for it?

Now there are two options from a sporting and economic point of view: Lotka stays in Berlin, coach Felix Magath sees the 20-year-old as “a really big number. He is a pillar of the team.” In any case, the prospect of Bundesliga appearances would be significantly greater at Hertha than at Dortmund, where Gregor Kobel is the clear number one and Lotka was still planned for the second division in the 3rd division.

Or Lotka goes to BVB, tentatively ending his dream of the Bundesliga and recommending himself to the professional squad thanks to good performances at BVB II. However, the outgoing Marwin Hitz’s place should be filled with another external solution, Regensburg’s Alexander Meyer should, according to “Kicker” information, be a hot candidate for the post behind Kobel.

And just as unclear as the player’s sporting future is the procedure at the financial level. Apparently, Hertha would now demand a transfer fee for Lotka if he were to switch to Dortmund. BVB, on the other hand, could very well have imagined compensation for the failed transfer.
