analysis Mönchengladbach In recent transfer periods, there have been rumors of clubs wanting to sign Ramy Bensebaini. Now it is concrete between Algeria and BVB. Why the whole constellation would make sense – especially for Gladbach.
More specifically, the topic first surfaced three weeks ago: “Foot Mercato”, the French version of the “fussballtransfers.com” portal, reported that Borussia Dortmund had increased interest in buying Ramy Bensebaini. Contacts for Gladbach’s left-back have already been made, and Bensebaini himself is aiming for a switch to the summer. At the time, there was still a transfer fee of 20 million euros – but it was too high. Now “Sport Bild” announces an impending change for a fee of twelve million. The Algerian cost nine three years ago.
BVB would like to get rid of Nico Schulz and usually uses Raphael Guerreiro at the back left, who should now also go. Sports director Sebastian Kehl, who for the first time is in charge of planning the squad for a season, is almost to wish a guy like Bensebaini is on his shopping list. In Dortmund, there would be a reunion with Marco Rose, under whom Bensebaini made his Bundesliga debut in 2019 after moving from Stade Rennes. Gladbach, however, had had him on the radar for a long time.
The fact that Bensebaini’s current contract expires in a year automatically makes him a candidate for sale. While manager Roland Virkus emphasized in a “Kicker” interview that he certainly wants to extend goalkeeper Yann Sommer and Jonas Hofmann and does not necessarily want to give up strikers Marcus Thuram, Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo, there is no such announcement regarding Bensebaini. Without mentioning a name, Virkus even proclaims, “One has a desire that he will go away.”
Apart from Florian Neuhaus, only Bensebaini was mentioned in this context. If he is healthy and ready for action, he always plays under coach Adi Hütter. Virkus’ predecessor Max Eberl, however, signed a possible replacement in Luca Netz last summer, and Bensebaini’s performance has fluctuated significantly for a long time.
The RP reporter’s assessment
“Foot Mercato” should be treated with caution as a source because the spread is large. In this case, however, the portal outlined a scenario that was anything but far out. The “Sport Bild” report is now even more specific, in other words: there is a high probability that Bensebaini will go to BVB.
Many Gladbach fans immediately remembered the following promise when they heard reports like this: “If Marco Rose says he will not take any players to Borussia Dortmund, then he will not take any players to Borussia Dortmund. Done, done.” However, Rose’s waiver from February 2021 only applied to the subsequent transfer period.
Dortmund’s effort for Bensebaini fits in with the transfer strategy for the designated second-placed side, who prefer to use clubs that are slightly lower in the Bundesliga’s food chain. Nico Schlotterbeck from Freiburg was signed to central defense on Monday, and if Schulz and Guerreiro leave, who knows if the new national team player David Raum from Hoffenheim could be interesting.
Gladbach, on the other hand, has taken precautions with the network transfer, and star striker Joe Scally can also play on the side. In Hannes Wolf, there is even a surprising alternative, as the Austrian often has the position of left-back in Swansea City. Although Bensebaini often helped in the top three this season, Borussia should compensate for this lack of back-up opportunity elsewhere.
If he is fit and focused, Bensebaini is one of the best in the Bundesliga in his position. But in the face of the coming upheaval, there is an urgent need to achieve the transfer proceeds. Even a fee of 12 million euros would be a welcome door opener for your own activities. Gladbach can not afford to wait until they are well under way with the preparation.
After Marco Reus (2012), Mo Dahoud (2017) and Thorgan Hazard (2019), it would certainly not be desirable to lose yet another top player to a competitor, at least for a while. However, it is not to be despised how much profitably Gladbach was able to make with the 60 million euros that BVB transferred over the past ten years.
