“Thanks to the support of our partners and fans as well as the Corona assistance from the federal government, we came relatively unscathed through the two pandemic years and are therefore on sound financial grounds,” says BG CEO Frank Meinertshagen. “Of course, this is only a snapshot because the pandemic is not over yet and it is difficult to assess how the coming season will go. However, we remain cautiously optimistic.”

The minimum budget of three million euros actually required was reduced during the corona pandemic. The required budget for the 2022/23 season was 2.75 million euros. “We are even over three million,” says Meinertshagen. BG Göttingen can trust their partners, not all sponsorship talks have gone through yet. The overall trend is positive.

Highest number of spectators for the match against FC Bayern

The number of viewers did not develop as expected during the last season. “There was a loss of revenue. We’ve been more optimistic about these numbers over the last year. But I’m glad so many fans came back to the hall at all,” says the Veilchen director. The Sparkassen-Arena was almost only sold out one time, during the 66:80 defeat against FC Bayern Munich at the end of November, at which time there were 3,318 fans in the hall.

In addition to Göttingen, 16 other clubs have received the license without conditions. According to the league, two clubs received the license on the condition that the financial plan is improved by 31 May. For one club, the license is subject to a subsequent condition, which must be met by 15 June. Following the decision of the licensing league committee and the sporting decisions already made regarding relegation and promotion, 17 teams will currently participate in the BBL season 2022/23. According to the league, the clubs will immediately take a position on a possible wildcard procedure.

Only Jena and Rostock can move on

Among the applicants were four applications from the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga, including those from the still possible sporting BBL promoters – Medipolis SC Jena and Rostock Seawolves. These two teams meet for the first time in a live semifinal duel on Thursday. Bayer Giants Leverkusen and Tigers Tübingen, who play against each other in the second semi-final, had not submitted a license application. But since in the end, only the finalists get the chance to advance to the BBL, only Jena or Rostock will be in doubt. Eisbären Bremerhaven and Römerstrom Gladiators, who had submitted their documents before the deadline of 19 April, could not be awarded the license due to lack of sporting qualifications.

The expert and licensing federation committees were to examine and evaluate a total of 22 applications. “The very good work of the clubs is reflected in the licenses: 17 clubs receive the license without any conditions or conditions subsequently – a new record. Given the corona pandemic and the consequent lack of ticket revenue, this result is remarkable,” said Thomas Braumann, chairman of BBL License League Committee.
