Day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft ended the long wait for the fifth highest-rated quarterback in the class, but only after a curious race on tippers triggered. Georgia set a new record while a rookie QB could potentially start straight.

NFL Draft 2022: Curious running on tips

The biggest excitement on day three of the 2022 draft was definitely the inexplicable race of kickers and players in round 4.

After the 4th round started relatively normally with a couple of running backs, cornerbacks and offensive tackles as dominant positions, the Cleveland Browns delivered the first exclamation point with the 124th pick. They retired Kicker Cade York from LSU. Only six picks later, it was the Baltimore Ravens who secured the first tipper in Jordan Stout (Penn State). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers then squirted out, pulling the 133rd pick in Jake Camarda (Georgia) right away.

It was all the more surprising that the most prominent player in this class, “Punt God” Matt Araiza of San Diego State, even had to wait until the start of Round 6 before the Buffalo Bills took him off the board.

NFL Draft 2022: Sam Howell’s Long Wait

Not so long ago, North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell was considered possibly the best quarterback in the class. But with only one QB drawn on Day 1 of Kenny Pickett and only three others on Day 2 of Desmond Knight, Malik Willis and Matt Corral, Howell had to wait much longer than expected before the start of Day 3.

Howell only heard his name with the 144th pick in Round 5 – Washington Commanders released him and now gives him a chance to fight with at least Taylor Heinicke for the back seat behind Carson Wentz. But that did not make Howell the first QB to be drawn on Saturday.

The New England Patriots surprised everyone again and selected Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe in Round 4 (137th pick). Zappe recently broke the FBS record for 62 touchdown passes and could be Mac Jones’ backup this season.

NFL Draft 2022: Will Pickett start in Week 1?

The only QB drawn in Round 1 was Kenny Pickett. On Saturday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin commented on his new rookie QB on the NFL Network and got people to sit up and take that mark.

Tomlin said Picket “definitely has a chance” not only to challenge Mitch Trubisky, but also to start right from the start of the season.

Pickett is from the University of Pittsburgh and, according to Tomlin, has the “highest floor” of any quarterback in the draft from the Steelers’ perspective. Trubisky, on the other hand, served as Josh Allen’s backup for the Buffalo Bills last year and had come to Pittsburgh in hopes of instantly succeeding team legend Ben Roethlisberger, who retired.

NFL Draft 2022: The Ravens pull the heaviest players ever

Baltimore Ravens, who overall very well drafted – more on that in this month’s draft marks SPOX -, created a rather unusual record with one of their choices. They drew Minnesota offensive tackle Daniel Faalele with the 110th pick in the draft. He came from Australia and used to play rugby and basketball before moving to the states where he started playing football in high school.

But that’s not what’s special about him. Not even the fact that he is 2.03 meters tall. No, the remarkable thing about Faalele is its weight. On his Pro Day several weeks ago, he weighed a whopping 390 pounds, which is almost 177 kilos. He is currently said to weigh 174kg, which would still be an NFL record. When he got to Gophers, he said he weighed 193kg. What a colossus!

NFL Draft 2022: Georgia Bulldogs set record

As many as 15 players from the National Champion Georgia Bulldogs were selected by the teams in this year’s draft. It is a new draft record for a single college in one year with a draft of seven rounds. College football playoff challenger Cincinnati Bearcats got pulled nine players, a personal record for the surprise team last season.

But it’s also noteworthy that the prestigious Power 5 school of Texas did not send a single player to the NFL via this draft.

NFL: Future of Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo still open

The draft began with an expectation that quarterbacks Baker Mayfield (Browns) and Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers) could be swapped during the draft. The draft, however, went without much movement in these personal details.

And after the Carolina Panthers eventually pulled Matt Corral after an uptrade late in the third round, both QBs are starting to run out of opportunities. Carolina is probably no longer in the draw, and according to head coach Pete Carroll, the Seattle Seahawks also have full confidence in their QB space around Drew Lock and Geno Smith, though the latter is currently said to be ahead with a nose, according to Carroll.

How it will continue with Mayfield is therefore completely open. A layoff does not seem to be an issue at the moment. But it also applies to Garoppolo, for whom it seems conceivable that he will eventually stay in San Francisco for another year – and even start with that, even though Trey Lance is still considered a fsvorit at work.
