NFL Draft 2022: What’s It All About?
The draft is, so to speak, the event of the talents. The best collegiate players applying for a spot in the NFL are spread across the 32 clubs. It is primarily about maintaining equal opportunities in the closed league as far as possible, league champions as in European sport should be avoided.
NFL Draft 2022: How to Create Draft Order?
As a starting point, the table from the previous season has been turned upside down to determine the draft order. This means that the team with the worst record goes first and selects the top talent in the draft class based on their position needs. This is followed by the remaining 17 teams that missed the playoffs – first the second worst, then the third worst, etc. – before the post-season candidates are allowed to play out for the first time.
Here we continue with the six franchises that failed in the Wild Card round – among these, the team also starts with the worst regular season record. Choices 25 to 28 are reserved for the clubs that pulled the short straw in the division games – here too the balance from the basic game is used for the order. Then there are the two losers from the Championship Games, followed by the defeated Super Bowl contestant in 31st place, and only then by the reigning champion.
Important: If the balance is the same, determine the strength of all opponents in the regular season (the strength of the schedule). Oddly enough, the weaker the opponent, the earlier the respective team can pick in the draft.
NFL Draft 2022: What’s Next in the Remaining Rounds?
The actual order is maintained in all seven rounds. From round 3, so-called compensating picks are mounted at the end. This is given by the league to compensate for the loss of players to free play. If a team has had to give up more so-called unlimited free agents than it has signed, it will be compensated with an extra draft pick. The maximum a franchise can get is four compensatory choices, which is the case for the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets in 2022.
NFL Draft 2022: Why is the order of the seven rounds different?
This is related to trades. Unlike in European sports, there are no transfer fees when changing players, but similar values in the form of other players or draft picks. This time, after the fifth, the New York Giants also have the seventh pick they got from the Chicago Bears during a pure trade in drafts.
In the first round alone, eleven choices changed hands in this draft (from April 22). The Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams all have no first-round picks in 2022.
NFL Draft 2022: Who Wants the First Choice?
Like last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars start. This again shows that an overall first choice is in no way a guarantee of success. In 2021, the team selected Florida quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
By the way: It was not until 2017 and 2018 that the same franchise started the draft twice in a row. The Cleveland Browns first selected defensive end Myles Garrett and a year later quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was about to leave.
NFL Draft 2022: Who has the most and who has the fewest draft picks?
The Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs are each allowed a dozen times. In contrast, there are only four picks from the Miami Dolphins, which recently caused a stir with Tyreek Hill’s trade and in return sent a first-round, a second-round and two fourth-round picks of this draft to Kansas City for the star receiver.
NFL Draft 2022: How Many Choices Are There In Total?
262, three more than a year ago. The San Francisco 49ers have the final choice, which will award the title Mr. Irrelevant. Since 1976, this term has been used for the last talent to find his new team through the draft. This tradition began 46 years ago with wide receiver Kelvin Kirk, who died in 2003.
Last year, the title went to linebacker Grant Stuard, who was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and also came on the final list. There are also some Super Bowl champions among Mr. Irrelevants: linebacker Marty Moore (2002 with the New England Patriots), back Jim Finn (2008 with the New York Giants – even though he was out injured all season) and most recently kicker Ryan Succop (2021 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
NFL Draft 2022: What Talents Will Be There Live?
21 of the biggest names in this draft class have been invited to Las Vegas. They are, in alphabetical order: Matt Corral (quarterback, Mississippi), Charles Cross (offensive line, Mississippi State), Jordan Davis (defensive line, Georgia), Nakobe Dean (linebacker, Georgia), Ikem Ekwonu (offensive line, North Carolina) ) State), Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner (cornerback, Cincinnati), Kyler Gordon (cornerback, Washington), Kyle Hamilton (security, Notre Dame), Aiden Hutchinson (defensive, Michigan), Zion Johnson (offensive line, Boston College), Jermaine Johnson (defensive, Florida State), George Karlaftis (defensive, Purdue), Devin Lloyd (linebacker, Utah), Drake London (wide receiver, Southern California), Evan Neal (offensive, Alabama), Chris Olave (wide) receiver , Ohio State), Kayvon Thibodeaux (defensive end, Oregon), Jameson Williams (wide receiver, Alabama), Malik Willis (quarterback, Liberty), Garrett Wilson (wide receiver, Ohio State) and Devonte Wyatt (defensive line, Georgia).
NFL Draft 2022: Are German Players Also Registered?
With Marcel Dabo, another German player is on his way to the NFL. The cornerback from Reutlingen played for Stuttgart Surge in the European League of Football (ELF) last year. It is uncertain whether the 22-year-old will be selected in Las Vegas.
Bernhard Raimann, on the other hand, is pretty sure to be picked. The Austrian first retrained from tight end to o-liner in 2020 and attracted attention as a tackle at Central Michigan University. The 24-year-old from Burgenland is now considered a potential first choice.
