Finale dahoim is lost – FC Augsburg after home bankruptcy against Cologne not yet saved

FC Augsburg could have stayed up in the Bundesliga by beating 1.FC Köln, but nothing came of it. After a certain not undeserved 1: 4 bankruptcy, the FCA is still mathematically not saved.

With the away win in Bochum on Sunday, FC Augsburg had put themselves in a comfortable starting position. A victory today in the “final dahoim” against 1.FC Köln and to stay up in the league was secured on its own. Even with a defeat it could be enough for the red-green-whites, but Stuttgart had to lose to Wolfsburg at their own stadium.

A starting eleven, unchanged from the victory of the previous week, was aware of the task and created the first good opportunities in the first five minutes through Vargas and Gregoritsch. As promising as the beginning was, it went badly a little later. With a double strike, Effezeh stopped the constant pressure from Augsburg.

After Hahn lost the ball in the opposite half, it went fast. Schmitz pushed the ball to the lurking Thielemann, who was allowed to push in unhindered from ten yards. The goal cheers from the approximately 5,000 fans who had traveled with them had not yet been set when it flared up again. After a header from Thielemann, Uth hammered the ball into the net with a direct shot to 2-0. A cold shower that the hosts had to get over. After a good half hour of play, the Swabians came back into the fight with good offensive actions. The spectators now got a really good football match, with some chances for both teams. Even though they were behind at the break, FCA had not ticked the points. The break result in Stuttgart (0: 1) was also able to calm things down.

The Modeste score makes everything clear

Coach Weinzierl still had a lot to tell his team, his men came out of the locker room well after Cologne. However, the words did not have the great effect at first. 1.FC Köln were now leading the way, both on and off the pitch. The man Weinzierl had warned about during the week, Anthony Modeste, made the decision.

After being judged by Gouweleeuw after a fine individual effort, the Frenchman himself went to the penalty kick. A situation from which a top scorer of this caliber cannot be taken. When he followed up with his 19th goal of the season with a remarkable flick, fifteen minutes before the end, there was no longer any doubt about the final winner. The temporary 1: 3 by substitute Niederlechner had no bearing on the outcome of the match.

One would not be able to stay up in the league on his own on this match day, the anxious gaze of Augsburg fans went to Baden-Württemberg, where the last hopes for today were shattered. Because Führich was able to equalize for VfB in the 89th minute of the match to 1-1, the quake continues in the Bavarian part of Swabia. FC Augsburg’s lead in the relegation zone is only six points. The Weinzierl squad must now book a ticket to a 12th Bundesliga year next week in Leipzig or at the latest in the season’s final match at home against Fürth. The tension does not get any easier.
