This legal exchange ends with the bitterest defeat of his life.
Former tennis star Boris Becker, 54, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at Southwark Crown Court on Friday. A hammer penalty for the former sports star! In early April, a jury found Becker guilty of four out of 24 charges in the criminal case for delaying bankruptcy.
Violent scenes at the announcement of the verdict at 16.44 (German time) after a nearly four-hour session! Rigid, with a bright red face and repeatedly with his eyes closed, Becker followed the statements of Judge Deborah Taylor in the case. Girlfriend Lilian (33) broke down in tears and sank in front. The son Noah (28), also in the courtroom, looked at his father in amazement.

Judge Taylor to Becker: “I could sentence you to 18 months for any of the offenses you have been convicted of!” Hard words! Taylor continued: “Fraud, tax evasion and money laundering: you have lost everything. But they have not shown any remorse. They have been humiliated by it, but they have not shown humility.”
The main claim: Becker himself decided which debtors he served in his bankruptcy. “He’s not entitled to that,” Taylor said.

Before that, Becker’s lawyer Jonathan Laidlaw had tried everything again to get a milder sentence. Described Becker’s dramatic situation. “He has virtually nothing left. The Becker brand is in tatters!” What a bitter bankruptcy statement! In his career between 1984 and 1999, Becker earned about $ 25 million in prize money.

But it did not help! Following the verdict, Becker seized his packed bag, which he had bought the day before in the luxury department store “Harrods”. A law enforcement officer led him out of the hall through a side door. The Wimbledon hero, who visited a church alone the morning before the trial, went straight into custody.

What’s next?
Becker was taken away – apparently to Wandsworth Prison in London. He stays there until a jail is chosen, where he will serve his sentence. With good behavior, Becker has the chance to be released after a year and three months.
A faint ray of hope in the dark case of the sports high-flyer.
What prison is Boris going to be in?
From court to prison!
Boris Becker must spend at least 15 months (if he is well behaved) in prison – and much points to London’s hard prison Wandsworth: In the second largest prison in the UK (6.5 square meters cells, 1500 inmates) the guards are particularly strict, VIP treatment is available it no. The toilets are said to be completely dirty, drug abuse and violence are the order of the day.
