American football: Konstanz Pirates starts

Baden-Württemberg State League: Konstanz Pirates has been around for five years, and the American football team from Lake Constance still has an immaculate board. So far, only one virus has been able to slow down the steep climb, but not stop it. Undefeated by defeat, the Pirates became masters twice and rose on every occasion.

Konstanzers has thus arrived at the Landesligaen Baden-Württemberg, which now starts the 2022 season. The Konstanz Pirates start the season with the Ludwigsburg Bulldogs (Saturday, April 16, kickoff at 3 p.m.), they play their first home game on April 30 at Bodenseestadion when Badener Greifs are guests (kickoff at 3 p.m.).

Konstanz footballers tackle: The Pirates create a home in Bodenseestadion

After the old seats have been removed, they must be disassembled and end up in an included container. All ...

American football is also booming in the heartland of classic football, which is evident from the number of spectators and great interest in the Super Bowl. The Pirates have also been able to take advantage of this boom in recent years, because before the number of spectators was limited due to the corona, more than 1000 spectators watched the Konstanz team’s matches.

And of course, they want to continue writing this success story in Bodenseestadion. Not only were they sportingly preparing for the new season, Bodensee Stadium was also renovated in-house in the hope of once again being able to play in front of a stately backdrop without restrictions. After an interrupted and reduced playing time, twelve games are now back on the Pirates program.

With a promotion team, of course, the question always arises whether it is first about staying up in the league or, as has already happened twice in the case of the Pirates, an undefeated run. “We have now come to a league where all teams are at the same level, where everyone can beat anyone,” says head coach Zeki Öztürk.

He points out important details: “Due to a restructuring of the league last year, three teams from the Oberliga were relegated to the Landesliga, where we are now newcomers. As a result, the level has risen again, and the differences will no longer be as great as in previous years. ”

So will his team soon deal with the first defeat in the club’s history? “It’s always hard to prepare a team that has never lost an official match for defeat. We always think about our potential. As long as the boys really have fun, we do not think about losing!” said Öztürk.

An important piece in the puzzle for last year’s success was certainly the signing of Lawrence Williams, who not only stabilized the defense with his routine, but also passed on his experience to his teammates during training.

Satisfaction despite defeat to HSG Konstanz II

Proud of their team's performance: Konstanz coaches Benjamin Schweda (right) and Vitor Baricelli.

With Devon Woods, another player has now been brought in to raise the level of the team as a linebacker. The 29-year-old American from Miami has already gained experience in Germany with the Berlin Thunderbirds.

The Konstanz coach hopes to be able to rely on one of his team’s strengths in the state league: “We have always presented ourselves as a team with strong nerves. Even when we were behind at times, we kept our nerves and eventually won. It is clear that we have to play focused from the first second of this year because it’s getting harder and harder to get back in the game. “
