79:95 against the leaders Barcelona
Alba concedes a clear defeat in the Euroleague
Despite a decent performance, Alba Berlin lost the Euroleague match against FC Barcelona. In the end, the star-studded Catalans were unsurpassed for the Berliners with their individual class. The dream of the playoffs lives on anyway.
In the basketball Euroleague, Alba Berlin suffered a home defeat on Tuesday night. In Max-Schmeling-Halle, the albatrosses lost to FC Barcelona 79:95 (39:47). The Berliners could fight again and again against the Catalans, but in the end the guests’ individual class, which belongs to one of the best teams in Europe, won.
Alba was briefed
Alba was able to keep up with the favorites in the first quarter. Even though they ran backwards from the start, they were still able to develop good throwing positions against the Catalans’ strong defense. In their own defense, Alba had a hard time stopping the offensively strong Spaniards, led by star player Nikola Mirotic. Shortly before the end of the first round, the visitors pulled away and increased the lead to eight points.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the problems for the Berliners got a little bigger. After a few seconds, leading player Luke Sikma was whistled for his third foul and was taken out of the game by coach Israel Gonzalez as a safety precaution. Still, Barcelona did not manage to break out clearly for a long time. Alba first lost concentration at the end of the quarter and went into the locker room with a 39:47 deficit.
Guests met at will
In the third quarter, the albatrosses did not have much to oppose the guests. They presented themselves unabated and in strong form and scored at will. Above all, the three-way quota of around 60 percent ensured that Barcelona, meanwhile, could pull away to 22 points. Alba’s Tamir Blatt reduced the deficit to 15 points with a three-point shot in the final second of the third quarter.
The German champion fought to the last, but also did not come close dangerously in the last round. “It was clear it would not be easy against a team of this caliber. But I think there could have been more,” said Alba’s Oscar Da Silva after the final siren. In fact, the Berliners presented a good performance against Barcelona, which, however, was not enough to beat the league leaders in top form.
Euroleague cancels results from Russian teams
Despite the defeat, the dream of getting into the playoffs is far from over. Before the match, the Basketball Euroleague announced that they would withdraw all Russian teams from the competition and cancel their matches due to the invasion of Ukraine. Affected are CSKA Moscow, UNICS Kazan and Zenit St. Petersburg. Petersburg. Instead of 18, there are only 15 teams left in the European competition, which Alba also benefits from.
The albatrosses are 12th in the standings and still have a chance to advance into the top eight, who then qualify for the next round. The Berliners continue in the Euroleague on Friday. Then they will receive the ninth-placed and multiple Serbian champion Red Star Belgrade in the capital.
