Bruehl. Graffiti – an art that is usually met with rejection. Most of the time, it is the illegal spray paint scrap that destroys public walls. Brühl now got a graffiti that was not only allowed, but even beautiful and desired. The council decided at the last council meeting that one of their buildings was in dire need of a makeover: the water lift next to the halfpipe and the basketball court.
“The idea came from the municipality itself, because in the past there has always been unauthorized spraying and the gray building is right by the main road so everyone can see it,” says Lea Giese. As head of the youth work in Brühl and Ketsch, Giese is one of those responsible for the three-day project. From Thursday to Saturday, always from 1 pm until well into the evening, all young people aged 14 and up could come and spray for as long as they wanted.
Pre-registration was not required. “Most of them are actually familiar faces from Juz,” says Eva Wolfgang, also a youth worker at Brühl. There and on social media, the project was successfully highlighted. On the first day of the project, 16 young people even came by. On the last day of the project, Mayor Dr. Do not miss the fact that Ralf Göck looks past and examines what the young people have accomplished.

The entire project was ultimately funded and supported by the community. To facilitate the spraying, the municipality not only made a toilet available on site, but even had scaffolding installed on the wall of the building. “What was to be sprayed was discussed in advance in the municipal council,” Giese explains. It was a wish of the municipality that the horseshoe, as it is known from the municipality’s coat of arms, appears in the graffiti. This wish was, of course, fulfilled.
Signatures and natural elements
In addition, a basketball and a basketball hoop should adorn the building. The halfpipe, which only serves as a seat, is designed and marked in a wall-like design. “We leave a small area free so you can still scribble with Eddingen,” laughs Wolfgang. The other areas should be designed predominantly in shades of green and as close to nature as possible. The natural elements must ensure that the building is more integrated into the environment and does not completely remove the luster from the adjacent nature reserve.
Finally, of course, there is also room for the signatures of all involved, where you can immortalize yourself and your work. To ensure that the implementation also proceeds professionally, support was even organized: the professional sprayer Florian Feigenbutz. “I have worked with young people in the Heidelberg area for many years,” reports Feigenbutz. It is also a challenge because the work task is not always successful and the material wear and tear is higher, “but it is always fun”. Purchasing materials that were heavily affected by the war in Ukraine was not easy. “The subsoil of the walls does not make the details so easy, but we have a huge area at our disposal,” says Feigenbutz about the spraying at the water lift. In this way, the work has become a true eye-catcher and transformed into an artistic building. It is to be hoped that from now on the walls will be spared from illegal graffiti, so that the time-consuming work has paid off in the long run.
