New quarantine rules – relief also for sports

Status: 07.01.2022 22:28

Football, ice hockey, basketball – numerous competitions are now threatened by the massive rise in coronavirus infections, including among athletes. The federal and state resolutions to shorten quarantine and isolation could bring relief.

According to the decisions, contact persons will in future be exempted from the quarantine, which has previously lasted up to 14 days, if they:

  • has already received a booster vaccination
  • is freshly double-vaccinated
  • has been vaccinated and recovered
  • or is newly substituted.

For everyone else, isolation or quarantine should usually end after ten days. Infected and contact persons must be able to “test themselves free” after seven days with a PCR test or a certified rapid antigen test with evidence. There is no longer a distinction between virus variants. Primarily due to the new Omicron variant, the number of infections is currently rising extremely fast and steeply.

The regulation on so-called ghost games, which was made at the end of December, remains in place. On January 24, the federal government and state leaders want to discuss the corona situation again.

Grizzlies Wolfsburg completely in quarantine

Although it is not yet clear when exactly the new rules for quarantine and isolation will take effect, it is also good news for the sport. Especially for teams that are hard hit by infections and restrictions on contacts like Grizzly’s Wolfsburg. The ice hockey team has gone into complete quarantine due to some corona cases. The Grizzlies had only just planned to give the entire team a booster vaccination. As a precaution, the match in Straubing was canceled on Tuesday.

VfL coach Kohfeldt sees the competition in danger

Coach Florian Kohfeldt from VfL Wolfsburg is also concerned about the growing number of corona and their possible effects on the course of the second half of the Bundesliga. “It has a massive impact on competition when matches take place the way they want tonight due to the pandemic,” the 39-year-old said, referring to the nine corona-related failures at FC Bayern Munich before the first half of the second. half of the season Match against Borussia Mönchengladbach (1: 2).

Having to replace so many players is “difficult for all coaches to accept. A large number of players are not there without their own fault. It is difficult to accumulate,” Kohfeldt said. “This accumulation should not happen too often, otherwise the competition is in danger. From a sporting point of view, one has to say it clearly.”

Numerous leagues affected by match cancellations

The Bundesliga has not yet been hit by match cancellations because the obstacles to this are high. As long as there are more than 15 professionals available (including at least one goalkeeper and nine licensed players; injured or suspended players are also counted), the club in question must compete. Several matches in the best leagues in ice hockey, basketball or volleyball have already been canceled or postponed due to Corona.

Scholz appeals: “Run” to vaccinate

According to the new quarantine regulations, it should now be in the interest of all clubs to give as many players as possible a booster vaccination as soon as possible. “Anyone who has the opportunity to be vaccinated should not go there, but rather run there,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) appealed after the federal consultations. This should not be a problem, especially for athletes.

Schleswig-Holstein with 2G-Plus also in organized sports

Following the federal and state consultations, Schleswig-Holstein also specified the rules that apply throughout the state. In future, 2G-Plus will also apply to organized sports and fitness centers for everyone over the age of 18, ie only access for those who have been vaccinated and have recovered with a current test – people with booster vaccination are excluded. You no longer need to submit a current test from the day of vaccination. According to the Danish Sports Confederation, not enough people in the country have been vaccinated three times.

Therefore, CEO Thomas Niggemann fears that the cost of 2G-Plus will be too high for many clubs, that sports offers will therefore be lost, and people will not go to clubs. The fitness centers also expect fewer visitors, says the employers’ association for German fitness and health facilities. Some studios plan to offer their own testing facilities – provided the country allows it.

Hamburg’s professional clubs and the Senate have a clarifying conversation

In Hamburg, the Senate had already decided on 2G-Plus for mass sports. The regulation applies from Monday (January 10). “Boosters” are also immediately valid in Hamburg. The announcement that professional clubs in the Hanseatic city would play in front of empty rows again from Monday attracted attention, while amateurs should have 200 (in the hall) or 1,000 spectators (outdoors).

Second division football team Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli, basketball Bundesliga club Hamburg Towers, handball Bundesliga club HSV Hamburg and ice hockey upper division Crocodiles Hamburg announced on Friday night joint statement in which they welcomed an offer of talks from the Senate.

HSV board member Wüstefeld wants equal treatment

“I do not understand the different legislative situations for indoor and outdoor events, nor the differences between culture and sports,” HSV board member Thomas Wüstefeld said. “As a professional sports organization, we do not want special treatment, we want appropriate equal treatment.”

Willoughby: Avoid permanent damage to professional sports venues

Tower CEO Marvin Willoughby had already asked the Senate for support due to loss of revenue from “ghost games”. In the statement, he said: “This conversation thread needs to be addressed as soon as possible so as not to damage Hamburg as a professional sports venue in the long term and to protect it from further competitive disadvantages.”
