Home Fitness Apps: These dangers should be avoided by beginners

Hannover. In fact, gyms should make the best sales of the year right now. One third of the contracts are usually entered into in the first quarter. But in 2022, the good decisions for the new year are again mixed with concerns among many: Is the fitness center safe enough in the corona pandemic?

In addition, training is currently subject to strict conditions: depending on the region and occurrence, 2G or 2G plus applies in the gyms and swimming pools – a current, negative coronal test is therefore required in addition to the vaccination certificate, unless you can already have a booster vaccination show.

Under these circumstances, many do not feel like signing a new contract at the gym. “Where 2G plus was introduced, new business has almost completely collapsed,” says Ralph Scholz, president of the German Industry Association for Fitness and Health (DIFG).

Instead, many decide to roll out the fitness mat into their living room at home. There are a number of ways to conduct exercise programs online. But are they good? An overview.

What online offers are there anyway?

  • Fitness center: Many gyms went online during the winter and spring of 2021, to keep in touch with their customers. Since the reopening this summer, this offer has been greatly reduced, reports Alexander Wulf from the Employers’ Association for German Fitness and Health Facilities (DSSV). Nevertheless, some studies continue to offer online courses in parallel.
  • Online gym: There are also many purely online fitness centers that have established themselves in the market in recent years. According to Stiftung Warentest, Gymondo (grade 2.0) and gym (2.3) are among the best. Customers can choose from several training programs and courses from online providers, and they must sign up for a paid subscription to participate. At Gymondo, the product tests praise, among other things, that the portal offers a test at the beginning, with which customers can find out their personal fitness level – similar to the initial consultation in a classic gym.
  • Fitness apps from sports equipment manufacturers: But there are also free apps offered by major sports equipment manufacturers, for example to retain their customers and market their products. Apps like Nike Training Club, Adidas Training App or Pumatrac also offer hundreds of training courses and some individual course plans depending on fitness level.
  • Youtube channels: Youtube channels with sports programs are also free, but funded by commercials. Stiftung Warentest tested three of them. The courses of Happy and Fit (grade 2.9) and Gabi Fastner (3.0) are worth trying. Major fitness chains like McFit or Fitness First also have YouTube channels where many workout videos can be viewed for free.

How much do online gyms cost?

Customers subscribe to online gyms – the longer the term, the cheaper the monthly fee. An annual subscription to Gymondo without discounts costs 84 euros and 119 euros for a gym. The Brandenburg Consumer Advice Center recommends that offers be made that can be canceled monthly as far as possible. This is possible with gym and My Fitness Video, with Gymondo the shortest contract period is three months. All three providers offer a free trial subscription for seven days.

What should beginners’ training be aware of?

Online sports offers only a few pieces of advice – both in terms of the intensity of the training and the execution. This can be problematic, especially for beginners. “Due to a lack of support from a coach, it is not possible to point out possible wrong attitude or wrong execution, which could lead to injuries or incorrect load,” said association spokesman Wulf. Inexperienced course participants are therefore recommended to take a course in a gym with direct supervision.

Wulf also points out that the range of courses offered online is limited: “These are usually courses with a small range of motion and without complex equipment,” he says. In most cases, the training takes place with your own body weight.

Beginners should also not overload themselves in the beginning, but stick to it in the long run, sports researchers advise. As a rule of thumb, training about two to three times a week for 30 to 45 minutes each is ideal for beginners. There should be a break of two to three days between workouts.

If you are using online sports betting for the first time, you should also test the technology with a trial subscription. For it is only in practice that it becomes clear whether the Internet connection is sufficient or whether there are other technical difficulties.
