Since the weekend before Christmas, Frankfurt has had an attraction for anyone looking for an extra kick to fitness. The area high up on the Skyline Plaza in Europaviertel was renovated for 2.5 million euros and is now officially opened. It’s all now called the David Lloyd Club (formerly Meridian Spa & Fitness).
The huge indoor training area has been completely transformed – apart from the course room with parquet floor. Instead of terracotta tiles, reminiscent of holidays in Italy from the eighties, a bright, stylish wooden floor now dominates.
The first thing you notice is the modern check-in counter to the left of the entrance. The club room extends to the right. There are drinks, snacks, soups, daily specials and, if desired, a menu from the nearby restaurant in the evening.
From here you can relax and watch those who are currently completing their training in the E-Gym Circle. Or the athletes who lift weights in the functional field.
“The old units have been replaced and replaced with state-of-the-art ones,” says the club manager Sylvia Panser. The David Lloyd chain took over Meridian Spa Fitness in January 2020. “It was difficult in the beginning with Corona,” says General Manager. The company, based in Hatfield, England, however, used the time to give the club a special and contemporary feel.
David Lloyd: Fitness boutique-style formats
The investment program for the eight Meridian systems in Germany is 20 million euros. “We now deliver fitness formats in an exclusive boutique style”, she tells. “Unique” is the HIIT format “BLAZE” and the programs “Cyclone”, “Spirit” and “Ign1te”.
“BLAZE” combines cardio, strength and combat. Everyone can go to their limits purposefully – and beyond that. Nina Vitielloone of the company’s master trainers, takes the curious guest inside the converted power center.
From the light it enters a darkened loft. A DJ and a coach warm up the crowd fighting on punching bags, weight benches and Woodway treadmills. There are three minutes available for each department, then they switch. The throbbing rhythms help to get the most out of yourself.
Nina, the expert, explains how it works: “Maximum heart rate is calculated based on age, gender and weight after a previous initial study.” Everyone gets their target size, which is important to reach as far as possible. The names of the trainees are displayed on the walls along with the percentage they have just achieved. “It motivates us to go even further.”
The electronic heart rate monitor Myzone is the pulse generator of the BLAZE equipment. Own boundaries can be gradually moved upwards. “It puts you in a good mood”, Nina reveals with a wide smile. “Even if you’re pretty exhausted afterwards.”
Top-class fitness, wellness and sports at the Skyline Plaza Frankfurt
Also a sport great similar Joan Manuel Lique Canaveral is impressed with what he sees. The Frankfurt boxer with Colombian roots, reigning international German super-lightweight champion, likes to quote Muhammed Ali. He said champions are not made in the gym alone. Deep down, he or she must have a dream of getting all the way to the top.
Proper training is always the foundation of success, Canaveral adds to the saying of his Boxidol. “What happens at David Lloyd is very similar to what we professionals do.” The 34-year-old believes that anyone who can use their strength purposefully gains self-confidence.
Of course, not everyone wants to reach the top in sports. “We offer something for everyone,” he says Ann Marie Quetz. Frankfurt members could also take advantage of the family-oriented offer from David Lloyd Club in Bad Homburg use, says the marketing manager.
Then it goes to the top floor. A beautiful wellness area with seven saunas, a large swimming pool, hot tubs and much more awaits you there. Above you are only the skyscrapers and the view of the sky. You want to reach the stars.
