Digital fitness: The most popular apps and tools

From online gyms to fitness apps: We asked more than 4,600 users which products they were particularly happy with. These are the results

We have listed the best recommendations from real users for each category. The winners include many well-known brands, but there are also apps and tools that you may not have considered before.

The benefit of digital fitness

The demand for digital fitness is huge, especially as the corona virus has led to fewer people around the world going to the gym regularly or taking advantage of sports facilities in clubs. According to the Employers’ Association of German Fitness and Health Facilities (DSSV), while studies in Germany in the first year of the pandemic lost about 25 percent of their members, digital fitness offers have registered high growth in the same period.

Disregarding the corona pandemic, other general benefits of online fitness offers are obvious: You do not have to drive to training first, you save time and travel costs, and you can play sports comfortably at home. Nevertheless, the motivation is as high as in a studio, because (even though far apart) one still plays sports in a group, and the courses are led by a coach.

The results of our study

Based on a survey of real users, 57 apps, devices or applications from 41 brands were awarded in 11 categories. Apps come from the 6 areas of nutrition, fitness, running, cycling, pedometer, yoga. The researched online programs are about fitness or yoga, the smart devices are training aids to improve endurance or intelligent weights. Only with the fitness trackers are there any subcategories.

In addition to the winners, there are other apps and brands that were rated positively by the respondents, but which were mentioned relatively rarely and therefore were not included in the final result. Therefore, all our rankings only show top tools that have been mentioned and evaluated often enough. The mention in a table stands for a clear, positive voice from the respondents. However, this does not mean that the quality of the brands that are not on the lists is questioned.

In the tables you will find the total score for each brand or app on the far right, which can be a maximum of 4.0. The total value comes from the 4 individual assessments for functionality, usability, design and price. For the sake of clarity, the individual values are shown as stars, a maximum of 5 is possible.

The detail values are based on the following grading: 5 stars were given to those whose detail value is above average, which in turn is the result of the detailed assessments of all brands or apps assigned in the respective category; There were 4 stars for them with a detail value up to the average value of the assigned brands or apps in the respective category. Respondents were also able to indicate which criteria are particularly important to them when making purchasing decisions. Therefore, the evaluation dimensions functionality, usability, design and price were weighted in the overall result. The ranking of apps and brands in a table is based on their overall score, listed in descending order. All of the brands mentioned there have achieved above-average overall values and achieve the title of “Best Brand for Digital Fitness” or “Best Fitness App”.
