AFL Kickoff in Vienna – Weekend results

The AFL starts on Sunday with a kickoff match in Vienna between the Danube Dragons and the Salzburg Ducks. The lower house already starts with full rounds, but with two teams fewer than planned.

The Dragons want the championship

In Floridsdorf, the 2021 Silver Bowl champion plays his first AFL match in the club’s history. The Salzburg Ducks, who started last year as the Salzburg Football Team, will face a team that will bring the Austrian Bowl to the Donaufeld.

Head coach is new to Donaudrachen Brett Morganthat Stefan Pokorny followers who left the club for Italy this summer to take over the post of head coach of Milano Seamen.

The Dragons will reach the Austrian Bowl with a new head coach

The Viennese will have to do without their wide receiver duo in 2022 Philip Haun and Felix Reisacher get past Haun playing in the Raiders ELF team, Reisacher in the Vikings. The successor was the Americans Camron Lewis committed, which arrived in Vienna in early March. As the quarterback stands next to him Chad Jeffriesagain the former Vikings player Alexander Thury on the Dragons list.

Salzburg start their first Bundesliga season with three US imports. Next Kris Dentonstarting again as the quarterback for the Ducks is safety Hunter Smiththat came from Telfs Patriots and Dual Player SamTaylor, which will probably be used both as a running back and as a linebacker. The ducks also made a painful exit to ELF: QB / WR Alexander Reisschl ended up with the Vienna Vikings.

The Dragons, who failed last year in the semi-finals for the third time in a row in the Raiders Tyrol, enter this match as the clear favorites against the promotions. But it is certainly a trap game for the Viennese, who early on claim the title, which they have only won once in 2010. Information about the ducks’ actual playing strength will only be given after the opening game.

Lower house starts with failures

Like the previous year, not all teams that have registered for the championship can also play this year. In Division 3, the potential newcomers to the league, Styrian Panthers, have completed all qualifying matches but are no longer able to play. It eliminates eight league games and a home game for the Wild, Mustangs, Vikings 3 and Broncos.

In Division 2, the Carinthian Eagles are no longer playable cards before the start of the season. Here, too, there are eight matches fewer. Rhinos, Gladiators, Reavers and Rams have a home game less.
